SYNCHRONIZING OUR INTELLECTUAL, EMOTIONAL & INTUITIVE WISDOM
“Listen to your gut, follow your heart, use your brain”, are common idioms. But have you ever thought to combine the wisdom of your three brains for better guidance in life and for better health and well-being?
When we speak of a brain, most of us tend to think of the brain in our head, not realizing we also have a heart brain and a gut brain. Yes, our heart and our gut are also populated with neurons like our head brain is. Our three brains function interdependently and support one another, yet they inform us in very different ways.
When we are faced with a decision or stressful situation in life, tapping into the combined wisdom of our Head, Heart, and Gut Brain provides us with a higher level of self-awareness and will guide us to make better decisions and experience life from a more peaceful and relaxed perspective.
The Head Brain
The cephalic brain is our cognitive brain and the control center for the body and its autonomic nervous system or ANS. Our body functions in two modes of the autonomic nervous system; “fight or flight” (sympathetic mode) and “rest and digest” (parasympathetic mode). These two functional modes rely on the information our Head Brain receives from our Heart and Gut Brains and on how efficient the communication between the three brains is.
Unfortunately in our modern society, we are disconnected from our Heart and Gut Brains and literally live in our Head Brains. This inability to integrate our emotional and intuitive processing with our mental processing creates chronic stress and tension in our system. We get “stuck in our heads” and rely on our cognitive brain to interpret our life experiences. We live in a habit of assumptions and dogmatic thinking that prevent us from connecting to curiosity and possibilities for learning and impair the neuroplasticity of our Head Brain and our capacity to change.
There is a saying “There is more wisdom in your body than in your deepest philosophy” by Friedrich Nietzsche. The body is born with innate wisdom; it knows what is good or bad for you, it knows how to heal itself, it’s giving you signals to guide you all the time. It is the mind that compromises this innate wisdom through conditioned beliefs. The body says, “hey here is a headache I have been trying to talk to you”, the mind says “oh headaches are normal part of human experience, I am only human”. Living our lives from our heads is therefore not allowing us to live to our highest potential for healing and self-growth that brings peace and harmony.
The Heart Brain
The cardiac brain is our emotional brain. It is the seat of consciousness of the self (our selves beneath our conditioning and masks). The primary function of our Heart Brain is to anchor the other two brains. When the Head and the Gut brain are fully anchored by the Heart Brain, the nervous system relaxes and we are able to move from “fight or flight” mode and move to “rest and digest” mode. When our nervous system operates from “rest and digest” mode (parasympathetic) we are able to start living in a calm and peaceful state and our body can heal.
The Gut Brain
The enteric brain is the seat of our intuition. It is involved in our defense mechanism and is closely connected with regulating our immune system and its ability to defend us from invading pathogens and toxins. Our Gut Brain also helps us with discernment – it helps us to discern between what is good for us and what is harmful in life, hence the saying “Listen to your gut feeling”. It becomes obvious when our gut rejects something we have eaten that is not good for us, but can we learn to listen to it when it tells us what life situations are not good for us? Can we learn to listen to what situations trigger our gut so we can become more aware of where we need to direct more attention for healing and self-growth?
STRENGTHENING THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE THREE BRAINS
In BodyTalk we implement the synchronization of the three brains in each session within each balance by gently tapping them out in a sequence. The tapping stimulates the electromagnetic fields in the body and initiates changes to re-establish balance and healing. You can do the same – just gently tap over the top of your head, over your breastbone, and over your navel while breathing deeply focusing on re-establishing healthy communication between your three brains and hence between your intellectual, emotional, and intuitive wisdom.
